Sho...Lovely forum and one which could run for ages. Should writers exercise caution when writing about characters outside their own ethnic make-up? Or should they throw caution to the wind? I think that we all have the right to write and say what we think without fear of any violent backlash, but we should also grow an extra layer of skin to withstand any possible reaction.

Good post.

Greetings from London.A Cuban In Londonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16423293358605007539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33369112.post-66408914519663618672008-10-28T13:59:00.000+05:302008-10-28T13:59:00.000+05:30Thanks, Jo Ann, for your input. One thing that's important, I feel, is that the ethnicity of a character be clear when it matters for the story being told. I do have some questions, and I will try and summarize my own thoughts about this in a post, hopefully in the next few days, as after that, the blog will be totally dedicated to the tour for a month :) One thing is certain : it's a great conversation to have. Don't you think?Katiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01423190518569699882noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33369112.post-70558074752863617042008-10-27T22:59:00.000+05:302008-10-27T22:59:00.000+05:30I always describe my characters, I feel something ...I always describe my characters, I feel something is missing if I don't ! I come from a cosmopolitan environment, with all races and backgrounds, and many times, saying a character is from this or this part of the world explains a lot (ie education, culture). My Angolan black or mixed characters don't always react the same way than the White Westerners. I think it's important.
When we watch a movie, it's a real person acting, not something blurry...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
